“I fully intend to see and speak to each of you in your homes in the coming weeks.”

“Our homes?” someone yelled from the back of the pack.

“Yes, the visits will be unannounced. Gentlemen, you have to see that the way you have treated your women as a whole is wrong. I know most of you are good men who in the past followed the culture of the pack. My own sister in law was raised Bane, by loving parents who treated her with respect and taught her to be strong.

“Brianna, could you join me?” Aiden said looking back to his Beta. “And you as well, Amber,” Amber stepped forward taking Aiden’s other side.

“It has not gone unnoticed that there are no women among you. This is Amber. She is my mate. All words that flow from her mouth will be taken as my words. She will be treated as if we were one person.”

The crowd nodded. At least, they weren’t hostile. To Amber, they just seemed confused.

“You all know Brianna. She was raised Bane. She stands beside me as your new Beta.”

“Okay, so that got them riled up,” Amber muttered while noting Brendan stepping forward and the guards standing at the ready. The guards were male and Bane, so Amber had to question how this would go if it came right down to it.

“Letting your mate speak for you is one thing but a woman as Beta?” a young man about Bri and Amber’s age stepped forward. He was bigger than the others. Linebacker was Amber’s first thought. She was sure her mate could take him in a fair fight, but would it be fair was the big question.

“I got this one,” Brianna said stepping forward.

“Mike, you were always an ass.” That comment stirred the crowd even more. “You think that I can’t handle my position just because I am female?”

“Females are the weaker sex.” Mike said crossing his arms in defiance.

“There is where you are wrong. You think because you are bigger, you have the advantage?”

“Of course.” Mike’s smug face turned to the others. Some dared to nod in agreement.

“Fine, if I prove you wrong, then are you ready to embrace the new ways of the pack with me as your Beta?”

“Prove me wrong?”

“Yes, I challenge.” A hush fell across the lawn. Only a gasp from Rene, who stood in the doorway could be heard.

“When I win, what will be my reward?”

Aiden stepped forward placing a hand on Brianna’s shoulder. “According to Council Law, if you win, you will be allowed to replace Brianna as Beta. This pack now follows Council Law to the letter.”

Amber looked at the list again noting that #3 said just that.

“This should only take a minute,” Mike said removing his jacket and handing it to one of the other males present. “Rules of engagement?”

“Yes,” Brianna said starting down the steps as the others backed away.

“What are the rules of engagement?” Amber asked Brendan.

“It’s like boxing. Your opponent has to be down for the count in order to claim victory.
